Duct sealing for Dunedin Hospital ICU

Sealing of riser

LIMS undertook the task of using Aeroseal sealant and technology to seal air leakages of 15mm diameter and smaller to improve the airtightness of two risers of sheet metal construction. These risers supplied air to the ICU at the hospital and needed to be airtight and leak proof.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

BUILDING

Dunedin Hospital ICU

LOCATION

Dunedin, New Zealand

AEROSEAL CONTRACTORS

Babbage

CONTRACT ENGINEERS

LIMS Aeroseal Team

GOAL

Improve air tightness in three of the HVAC risers supplying air to the ICU

BEFORE AEROSEAL

90.6 L/s of leakage equivalent to 30.4cm hole

AFTER AEROSEAL

8.6 L/s equivalent to 2.9cm hole

RESULTS

91% Reduction in Duct Leakage

Seal air leakages of 15mm diameter and smaller and improve the airtightness of sheet metal vertical ventilation risers.

Late in 2021, LIMS Aeroseal was tasked with eliminating three risers as the source of leakage in Dunedin Hospital ICU. The job was a resounding success with 98%, 93% and 95%, respectively, improvements in airtightness. We achieved this with minimal disruption to the patients and only took two working days. We had two Southern District Health representatives on hand, which was great because they took a genuine interest in the process. Scepticism was transformed into Richie being genuinely impressed. This is the second ICU we have done at hospitals in the South Island.
